There has been some researches oneffective ingredients of a tonic product mainly composed of mulberry, theoutcome showed that both polyose andalkaloid significantly reduce the fasting blood glucose in a alloxan diabetesmouse,and they also evidently prevent any increase of blood sugar in themouse.

3The functional mechanism of mulberry

The authorhas conducted a research on a blood sugar lowering tonic product mainlycomposed of mulberry, in cooperation with Physiology Department, Xiangya MedicalSchool, Mid-South University.  In observation over its prevention and“healing” effect on mouse’s diabetes caused by alloxan, the result showed that:  

1、Prevention:Productand its separated groups in alkaloid and amylose, they are poured into themouse’s stomach with a body weight dose of0.4ml/20g each, the prevention is on the increase of mouse’s blood sugar causedby alloxan. 3 days after the alloxan injection, the alkaloid group and alkaloid+amylose +flavonegroup’s blood sugar level is evidently lower than comparative group, which maybe related to the fact that alkaloid can reduce the blood sugar increasingsevere reaction caused by alloxan.(p<0.01);7 days after the alloxaninjection, the product undiluted liquid group’s animal blood sugarconcentration falls to the level before the alloxan injection. The differenceis very evident with the comparative group,and alkaloid and amylosegroup sugar blood level is evidently lower than comparative group(p<0.05).

2、Treatment:the product undiluted liquid and its effective ingredients alkaloidand amylose are poured into a alloxan high bloodsugar mouse’s stomach with a body weight dose of 0.4ml/20g each for 7days, and this can bring down the high blood sugar mouse’s fasting blood sugar, which proves the efficacy of product undilutedliquid is better than phenethyl diguanide. Before taking theproduct all animal’s fasting blood sugarevidently raises, higher than normal mouse, the model is successfully built. Given the product undiluted liquid for 3 days, the concentration of bloodsugar evidently  falls, compared withbefore taking and homochronous distilled water group, the discrepancy makessignificant sense <0.01);7 days after stomach pouring, phenethyl diguanide group animal’s fasting blood sugar falls obviouslycompared to before and homochronous distilled water group, the discrepancymakes statistics sense(P<0.01);undiluted liquid blood sugar evidently falls, the discrepancy makessignificant sense(P<0.01);alkaloidand amylose group blood sugar also falls, the discrepancy makes statistics sense(P<0.05),but the effect is weaker than undiluted liquid and phenethyl diguanide.      

The experiment continues to validate the blood sugar lowering function ofalkaloid and amylose. The results also show that mulberry amylose, alkaloid andother ingredients in product act out some concerted and compatible effects.Combining the falconoid and mulberry DNJ, addingit to drink, this kind of drink restrains more effectively the rise of bloodsugar than mulberry DNJ alone, which means falconoid and mulberry DNJ have some concerted effect. But itsconcerted mechanism still needs to be studied further.

Though there is no research report on the influence from mulberry speciesand producing area on the effective contents, but it has been proved byrelevant study, that mulberry effective content has much to do with vegetative period. That is, early autumn and after frost are the timeswhen the flavone and polyphenol content raises obviously. Besides, theabstraction temperature has large influence on mulberry effective ingredients:mulberry is often abstracted in high by high temperature, which does not onlyimpact some effective components, and also cause the bitterness of extraction. Throughrepetitive experiments by the author, it is discovered that the method ofladder temperature (i.e., use different temperature for different effectivecomponents) can effectively abstract different effective components, and keepthe extract’s great taste.

4.The human body clinic application of mulberry blood sugarlowering

By now, there are 130 million of diabetes patients across theglobe, and number is still on a radical rise. As is shown in the result,compared with hypoglycemic drugglibenclamide capsule, mulberry capsule has evident blood sugar loweringeffect, the reduction rate is 27%(P<0.01). Meanwhile, the cholesterol content in the blood also falls by 12%(P<0.01).

In cooperation with Natural Plant Application/Research Center of SouthMedical University (formerly the First Military Medical University), the authorcarried out a study on a blood sugar lowering tonic product mainly composed ofmulberry, observing its clinic efficacy. The result is: 20ml/person/day,using for 3 months in a row, 3 months later, according to the fasting blood drawing from the users, the total effective rate is 94.74%,andevident effective rate is 50.88%(patient’s blood sugarlevel falls back to normal).
